Combine the liquid (water, milk, or a combination) and salt (if using) in a medium saucepan. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over medium-high heat.
Once boiling, immediately reduce the heat to low. Slowly pour in the Cream of Wheat cereal while whisking constantly. Continue whisking vigorously for about 1 minute to prevent lumps from forming.
Cook, stirring frequently, for about 3-5 minutes, or until the cereal has thickened to your desired consistency. Be sure to scrape the bottom and sides of the pan to prevent sticking.
Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in your preferred sweetener until well combined.
Pour the hot Cream of Wheat into a serving bowl. Add your favorite toppings and enjoy immediately!
